Ritteri Anemone - Heteractis magnifica

I bought a Ritteri Anemone - Heteractis magnifica from Livaquaria.com. I received it on Wensday last week. It hasn't moved agound the tank at all and alternates from haing cool inflated yellow tip tentacles to looking like a sack of crap sitting on a rock with very thin tentacles. My ocellarous clowns love the anemone. What sould I do ... I'm worried that it is wasting away.

Have you had any problems feeding it?

Well, that may be a problem. What does the anemone eat? I thought it being photosynthetic was sufficent for its nutrition.

Any large meaty substance....silversids, mysid, brine shrimp....but if your clowns are taking to him he will get food as well from them. A litlle evry few days should be plenty. And yes they do like light as well!

Not all anemones will roam. if he is happy where he is then he will stay put. Just give him a few days to adjust to the new home and clowns. He will probably do fine!

Feeding is not necessary when the lighting is intense enough; not saying that they do not like a tidbit from time to time.

Lighting is three 250W MH and two 140W VHO actinics. Anemone is probably about 2 feet from the light source. Have a mixed spectrum of two 10K and one 14K MH.

Really no need to feed then!

But they won't mind an occasional feeding!

Lighting sounds alright.

Make sure to keep your water quality high and your water flow turbid. Also, make sure the overflows and pump intakes have very large strainers on them so you don't end up with anemone soup.

Ok, new question with this anemone. After asking the above question, the anemone seemed to be doing better. I did my regular weekly 20 gallon water change (which for my total system volume of 220 gallons is about a 10% change). This is the first water change since I put the anemone in the tank. I looked at it this evening and found it to be holding onto the rock in only a few places with its foot and its central mouth is gaping and protruding. I snapped a few shots. Is it dying? Should I remove it? Is it reacting to the water change? What is going on with it?

Sorry for the poor quality, it was the best I could get with the actinics.

not sure about anyone else..but the picture is kinda hard to see..at least for me..

i dont have the same anemone is you..but sometimes mine will be all out and huge then another day it will be all shrivled up looks like its gonna die.. usually when i place a piece of frozen brine to its tenticle it will pull away then i let another touch it..it takes it from from my hand.. i feed it about every 3 days or so...i feed it when its not shrivled up and when it is...
sometimes food doesnt make it get bigger but i guess i feel if its eating its ok..

i got mine as a hitch hiker when getting LR.. my has survived...
GL though..
could you get a better picture without actinics so we could see?

the tank has been setup since July, it went through a crash in September due to a power outage and cycled again. It has been stable since September.

I can try tomorrow to get pictures under regular halides. If you look at the first picture, the big what blob area that looks like a tounge hanging out is the ceter part of the anemone that I am talking about.

I still think you should feed it, regardless of lighting. Especially since most of them expel a lot of their photosynthetic xoos when stressed... like being stuffed in a box and shipped to your door...

I fed the crap out of my ritt for the first month and then backed off on the feedings gradually.
