RIP Gordon the LMB - suggestions for replacements?

Well, my concerns about Gordon the LMB were well founded - I was worried about him looking thin last week (tank now so clean there's not much for him to eat and he never took to any prepared foods), then on the weekend noticed he was a bit more lethargic than usual. Then last night when I got home he was really struggling - looked very much like he was having difficulty 'breathing'. I transferred him to the sump to keep him out of the way of the lemon tang who was just starting to monster him - but he died overnight. I brought him in to work to do a post mortem (one of the advantages of working in a vet school) so we'll see if it was old age, hunger or something else that did for him in the end....

Son no. 2 sounded sad about him this morning - looks like we may need a consoling trip to the LFS on the weekend. Now my problem is what I can add - current inhabitants:

yellow tang
clownfish (clarkii)
orchid dottyback

all of which are showing rather bully-like tendencies. the goby we added a few weeks back disappeared MIA. The 3 chromis we had also were picked on by the clown when the tang arrived (pecking order I guess). I thought about a banggai cardinal pair - would they be able to hold their own? Any other thoughts? (55 gallon tank)

from what I have heard baggai cardinals will not fare well with being picked on...they barely swim...just kind of "hover"

really sorry to hear about your LMB...the same thing happened to me last winte...no more algae for John Deere to eat and he refused prepared foods... I have not replaced him, although I really like them...

what about a dart goby, or yellow watchman? They wouldn't necessarily "hold their own" so much as be good enough at avoiding confrontation. They can hide very quickly...until the other fish eventually get used to them.
