Riddle
What has a stalk/shaft (?) like a feather duster, looks like a feather duster, but doesnt have the feathers like a feather duster??
I have this odd brown thing in my sump that looks like a worm of some sort. It looks like a feather duster except it doesnt have the 'feather' part. There is something down inside. It is flat with a brown spot in the middle. I have been watching it this eve. and I just dont know what the heck it is!!
Any ideas?
No I do not have a picture of it

Its probibly a feather duster. every once and awhile they will expell the feather and grow a new one. just give it a couple of weeks and it should show up.

I am not convinced. I called Veronica (sand_reef) over from across the room and she was stymied as well. We will see. Its bizarre whatever it is. The part that is in there doesnt even look like a feather duster part. I have some of the most bizarre things in my tank!! Why cant it be normal?

LOL, it is!!!
How big is it? I had something like that for quite some time, but it was almost a foot long. I would see it come out from under the rocks at night and it looked like it was inhaling water for feeding purposes.
Straaaange goings on

LOL, that was far from what I was thinking...I think I had the tail of the elephant But after reading Adrienne's description again, your answer makes sense Sculpin
Adrienne, feel the tube, is it hard or soft? Be careful, the edges of the tube are very sharp if it's a Vermetid snail. Kewl animal, it will throw out a mucus web to catch food particles and then reel it back in to feed.

Its not THAT big Dave. Its about 1 1/2 inches tall, and about 3/4" attached to a small piece of rock. The thing inside has a disc looking thing on the end with a dark brown spot in the middle. When I try to get close to look at it I can see it retract down into the tube. The tube is sort of goldish tan and is hard. It is not clear but slightly opaque.
Veronica.... is that an accurate description there???

Bingo! We have a winner Vermetid snail it is. The thing you see opening and closing is the arpeture (? help me out guys, I need more caffeine!), anyway, the little "door" the snail closes up to protect himself, just like a turbo or trochus or any other snail uses.

Here is a link to a vermetid page with a pic if that helps with the confirmation of a vermetid snail. I have many of them in my tank, some get pretty big. Hope this helps, Julie

Wednesday nights are Target feeding nights at the McMullin house here. I fed all the corals in the tank and watched my mystery tube and you are right, that 'disc with the black spot' is a door. I saw it make a little net, poke some feelers out and was catching stuff as it washed by.
Thanks folks mystery solved. Of course mine is cleaner and nicer looking than the one in the link cuz
"My tank is too clean"
Anyway, all this and was able to find out what it was and I didnt have to have a digital camera!!
Thank You to everyone that responded, you all rock!!
