I just went with the "It's Magic" explanation.
Water is the most important thing in your tank. The water coming out of your tap has all sorts of disolved stuff that you probably don't want to put in your tank. Is a RO or RO/DI filter necessary? Some will argue that it is, some will say they're fine without it. I'm not convinced it's necessary, but I do have one and think it's a very good investment in the long run. I have well water that is LOADED with silicates and I had a bad diatom problem because of it. Once I started using RO/DI for my make up water, my diatoms went away.
