Sara, what are you plans for total flow in your tank? You should be turning your water over at least 10x per hour. I think your tank was a 58 gallon? You should have at least 580 gallons per hour flow. You should decide how much will go through your sump (recommended to match your skimmer capacity) and then either use powerheads or a closed loop to make up the remainder. What are your plans?

How big is your main tank? How big is your sump? How high is your head? This will help deturmion your proper return pump speed.

Tasher, I don't agree. I think sump turnover should be somewhere between 4X and 10X, not at least 10X.
I think that in tank flow (done by closed loops or powerheads) should be at least 20X

As far as the two pumps you linked, I don't have experience with either one but I believe I've heard the Mags are better. I guess you've decided to go with a submersible? Those are easy to use but can generate some heat in your tank. If you start adding lights, powerheads, and submersible pumps you can start generating enough heat to require some method of cooling such as fans or a chiller. I run a submersible myself but I do have a $500 chiller.

Whiskey, I didn't say sump turnover, I meant total turnover. So she needs to decide how much of that will be in the sump.

Oh, the distance from the water level in the sump to the top of your main tank.

I agree with Tashier on the matching the return to your skimmer processing capacity.
As far as total tank turnover...it think 15-20x really should be the low end of the scale. It will generally helo with eventually getting all of your water from the tank down to the skimmer eventually along with just getting better flow through your corals.

Oh, ok, got it, I was kinda supprized by that the more sump flow the bigger problem microbubbles are going to be.
