OK, back to pump curve reading 101.

go here. click on the link that says "Click here for more pics" under the pic of the pumps. this will bring up a normal pump curve chart. the curve you want to be looking at is labeled QP16, that is the QO 5000. we have determined that the head height that the pump will be pushing is at least 5' of head, prolly not much more than that due to just plumbing stuff. if you look at the chart the left side is head heigh the bottom is flow. find the 5' line on the left. now go right untill it hits the QP16 line. this is the flow at 5' of head. now run your finger down (i know your finger is on the screen ) and find the gpm label. sorry, i could not find a flow chart in gph, only gpm. this is an easy fix. just multiply by 60. there are 60 minutes in an hour so that is why you multiply by 60. therefor the flow for the 5000 is 1080gph (18X 60).

this is much closer to matching your 1200+ gph that your overflows can handle.

THANKS for those charts Geoff.... and for helping me understand head pressure... and pump flow rates...sorry to be so dumb about it...sooo I guess it makes more sense to go with the Quiet One......hmmmm

Just because your overflows can handle that much flow......isnt necessarily a reason to give them that much flow.

What skimmer are you running, and what pump drives iut??

i can not tell what pump it is using. i like Fly like to see a balanced flow between the sump and the skimmer. in a perfect world if you use the QO5000 than you should have a skimmer that processed 1000gph.

this is water that actually goes through the skimmer and not what the skimmer pump is rated to do. in most cases a skimmer cuts the flow down about 60%.

Either pump will work Jenn. I couldnt find any information on that skimmer in regards to the specifics on the pump. Im guessing 500 gph tops.

If you feel better about using the quiet one becasue slightly(very slightly) less plumbing involved, then use the quiet one. Whatever pump you use, make sure to put a ball valve above the union by the pump......then you can taper it back accordingly.

Or if you want to save a bit of space and one less fitting you can get a true union ball valve.

I checked the pump, it is rated for 3000 L/H which makes it rated for about 793 GPH

the pump is rate for 793gph at 0' of head. that means the pump when used in a skimmer is lucky to push 350gph. skimmers really are flow hogs. in other words i would prolly want to get 3 of those skimmers if you wanted to run either of those pumps.

i know, i know, reality check.

i am in the same boat. my eductor based skimmer powered by a Mag 12 is not even close to processing 400gph. i have to get it up near 1000gph also. i am thinking of building another skimmer.

thanks Geoff....

I am so frustrated... maybe I will hire Vince (VMD) to just come and do my plumbing....that way, I don't have to think about it anymore and I know it will be done right. hmmmmmm....
