Replacing a SB, Questions

So...

If I decided I wanted to replace my SB due to Phos and SO4 problems, could I just.

Remove LR & Livestock
Drain tank
Remove SB
Dump in new SB
Fill Tank
Install PVC stands to put LR on
Replace LR & Livestock

Any problems with the above steps?

Also thinking of a finer substrate 2-3" Deep. I was looking at something like the Caribsea Aragamax Oolitic Reef Sand or something similar. Any recommendation or advice?

I am planning on doing the same thing, switch from crushed coral to sand. Does anyone think the tank will cycle again. I don't want to hurt the corals.

Just make sure all of the animals are oput of the tank before you start disturbing the rocks imbedded in the sand. Go ahead and save all the water you can...but once you first stir up that substrate....the remaining water is trash. Its ok if you end up doing a 50% water change in the process, just do not use the water with nasties stirred up in it.

Make up your new ASW that will be needed in advance and have it to temp. This wil make thw whole thing much less stressful for everyone including yourself as you will be ready.

i did something similar to this but i broke down a 60G and uped to a 100g 3 weeks ago.i first remove about 10 gallons of water and place it in a rubber tub then i put in the live rock that was not on the sand only the rock that was staked. after this i remove the water and placed it in the 100g i keeped doing this until there was only about 4 inches of water. that way it was easier to get the fish out. after i remove them i put then in other bucket with the same tank water. after this i disposed all the nasty water and sand and got rid of it. then i place my new sand in the 100g next day i placed all the fish back into the 100g tank. been running 2 1/2 weeks now no algue bloom and everything (fish n corals) survived the move.

Sweet. When people use the term 'sand', does that include both silicon and araganite based substrate? Any difference?

Also: How can you calculate how many pounds you would need. I have a 48x24 bottom and want 2-3 inches of substrate. Any brainiacs that can tell me how much I'd need?

The carib sea aragonite special grade is perfect! Not sure how big your tank is but a 40# bag should be plenty for 2-3" unless you are over 100 gallons. Then you'll need a little more!

I only have about 10# in my 110 but the sand is ~ 3/4" deep and only in the front...none under the rock!

According to that calculator I will need more than 120lbs for 2-3" SB??!! That seems like an awful lot. Does that sound right?

What size tank.....when I first did my SB 4 years ago I think I added 80# of (40# aragonite & 40#CC) and it made ~ 3" SB. This was covering the entire bottom.

Like I saud above I know have like 10-15# but only have about 3/4" and it is just out in front....nothing under the rock!

Well ~80# should get you around 3" and 120# more like 4+"

It's up to you!
