Refugium

Ok, so I have a 20 gallon and I want to add a refugium to it. Hang on would be nice but wouldnt work since I have a hang on skimmer and a hang on filter so it will have to be under my tank. I dont know much about them and would appreciate any help as far as good deals, plants, lighting, etc.

to add a refugium down below you will need to get an overflow. this will pull the water off of the top of the aquarium and drain it down to the refugium. you would then need a pump to return the water.

why do you need a refugium? the reason why i ask is that you will be pumping the water up, which means you will be chopping up the critters as you return them to the display. which for some is not a big deal, just worth mentioning. if you are going to be going through that much trouble then you might as well make it into a sump and move the filter, skimmer, and heater down there into it. then you could use a hang on on the display instead of a hang on on the sump down below.

My refugium is a 15 gal. tank under the 28 gal. display. I have a 'Lifereef' overflow and a mag 5 for the return. My lights are PC with one 50/50 bulb (though you can probably get away with less light) and I've got about 5 or 6 different types of macro in there. I like the caulerpa because it grows fast and I harvest about 3 cups of the stuff every two weeks.

Geoff is right, if possible, a fuge above the tank would probably keep the larger critters alive because they don't get chewed up in the impeller of the pump.

HTH

Interesting side note Geoff - I put a firefish in the fuge to keep another firefish that had found it's way down there a couple of months before, company. Within 2 hours, the poor thing had found a half-inch gap between the glass and the intake of the pump and got sucked into the pump. The reason I know this is that when I checked for the new fish, I happened to look up into the display and saw the fire shrimp munching away on what was left of the fish - the shrimp had a minimum of 1 1/4 inches of the tail end of the firefish clamped in his little claws. The pump obviously killed the fish, but that chunk was quite large and got through in one piece. Weird. Needless to say, the original firefish is now in the main tank since I was able to catch him when I tore down the tanks a few months ago for the move.
