REF Location

I am going to be adding a refugium for sure but am not sure where to put it. I think I basically have two options; below the tank or a hang-on unit.

I like the idea of the hang-on unit because its a simple overflow back into the tank instead of the 'spinning blades of death' return pump. However I'm worried about the size of a hang on. I saw this hang-on at premium aquatics, its a little less than 5 gallons. I have a 55 gallon tank with no current sump or DSB. I would like to add a minii DSB to the refugium and cultivate flora in there (duh). Will this size be sufficient if I run the ref lights eiither 24/7 or opposite cycle??

TIA

Hey Recall it should be fine. However I would suggest braceing the botton of that unit. Overtime it will put alot of stress on the clamps and the tank. To be honest with you I would go with a simple tank above your main or on top of it. YOu could feed it with a PH and have a bulkhead drilled into it to allow water to return back to the tank. This would cost a heal of a lot cheaper than the unit you are showing above.

hope it helps

I thought about that but I (ie my wife) am big on the overall look of the tank in our living room. I havnt been able to figure out an above tank setup that doesnt look like a tank simply sittiing on top of the my canopy. i may try adding a shelf above the tank and placing the refugium up there. thanks alot for the info, nice to know I can fall back on the hang-on unit if i cant't work anything else out. gracias
