Reef to fish only conversion
Well fellas i made the hard switch from reef to fish only last week. I took the dreaded walk of shame and returned my corals to LFS. I have always wanted to do both and im planning on getting back in to corals but we have a new attition on the way so i have other priorties right now. I have been told that fish only is cheeper and easier. Is this true. Are their any good pointers when doing a fish only? im thinking of changing my live rock around. Since i had it set up with plenty of places for corals.

Congrats on the new addition I believe Fish only will be cheaper and easier as calcium and Alk won't need to be monitered and tested for Fish can also tolerate higher nitrates (within reason)

well it was a walk of shame to me....i guess ... i realy dident want to convert but it was a must do. I relly enjoyed my corals.
Most people start with fish only then convert to reef. The lfs looked at me like i couldedt handle a reef tank ...... as to why i was convertign but in reality it was $$ and time. we are putting our time , effort and $$ in to our house at this time......

You can run a lower salinity too to help ward off parasitic pests.
YOu don't need the fancy lights either.

FOWLR are less expensive to run and maintain. pretty much just food and salt are needed. no need for the Ca and alk tests and suppliments. the lighting is not nearly as strong so the electricity bill will be less.
good luck, there is no shame in a nice looking FOWLR. besides you can always throw some shrooms in there. they will grow under anything.

Hey dont be sad. (well okay, be a little sad) but I did the very same thing recently. converted my 50 gallon reef to a 30g fowlr (and a couple mushrooms that wouldnt come off the rock). I do miss my corals but keep telling myself that the time, money, effort, and mental angst (I obsessed about the tank) will not be missed pouring into the tank. and maybe in a year or two I will go back. or maybe I will do like another hobbyist and get rid of the tanks altogether and invest that time and money into getting dive certified and go visit the REAL coral reef!

that woudl depend on what you have for the tank itself.
meaning, if the lighting system and Ca levels are right, then yes you can have nice corraline growth. most FO/FOWLR dont have a lot if any growth..
