Reef Clubs
This may sound stupid, but I'm going to ask it any way. A friend and I have thought about starting a reef club. We've gained a vast array of knowledge and information over the years and would just like to promote the hobby to help many of the newbies in our area. My question is this, what does a reef club really consist of ? Where do you meet, someones house, pick one store, all the stores, a hall, school etc. How often, how long, seasonal etc ? Membership dues or not ? We are just amatuers who have done very well with our own systems: we are not naive enough to think that we can lead/instruct others who have less knowledge than we do. If any of you are reef club members, please, share as much information as you can to help us out.
PS. I finally got my yellow ricordea to give me some baies. Will photograph it this week.
Thanks for the info in advance. TRK

get together with your friend and make up fliers, ask to post them at LFS. See what turns up and go from there
Just getting to know othere reefers in your area is a blast, and the learning never stops

Our reef club here in Portland started from a couple of "reefer picnic" get togethers and took off from there. Most of us met through this board We did post fliers at some of the LFS though. We have met at private homes and LFS. We try to come up with a topic of conversation, relying on either personal experiences or some basic research. We're all in it together to learn and have fun. The frag trading is a big hit and it will give you a pool of addict....er, club members who can help each other out in emergencies.
We're still pretty informal but our club is growing all the time!

Hi! Many years ago we had a reef club meeting once a month! We would meet at a member's home and view their tank and pick up a few pointers just by looking at the tank and then we would have a discussion topic and after just mingle among the hobbyists and learn some more and have fun!
It was alot of fun to go to each member's home and see their tanks and see how each one set theirs up! We did not charge anything! Johnny

Hello TRK, I'm not sure whwere in MI you are at, however I would be interested in contributing to your club. If you guy's are really going to get something going, let me know I may be able to help in some way. Good luck, it would be great to meet other people from MI. that share this interest.

We have a large club here in the twin cities. We get together at someone's house every month. We have been lucky enough to have a couple of special meetings at the zoo or at Augsburg College.
The club has gotten so large that we are trying to make it more structured. We have the tank owner talk about the set-up, problems, etc. and then have a question-answer session. The rest of the time is spent socializing and talking reefs .
Good luck to you!

Hey thanks everyone.
One more concern, and I'll be very blunt here. I'm really not that comfortable with 20 complete strangers coming into my home to see my tank as well as layout of my home. (If you get my drift). It takes me several months before I'll even allow a new friend to come over, let alone a total stranger. I hope no one replies and says I'm over reacting. I think we'll start with a neutral meeting place until we can really get to know who's the coock and the quack in the bunch.
Hey NICKG, I'm about 30 mile east of you near Flint.
Thanks again everyone.

Reef Keeper your not too paranoid.
I think anytime you start a group like
that it would be best to get a meeting
room of some kind. Public Library would
have such a room, a church, etc.
I wish we had a club of some sort in the
Des Moines or central Iowa area.
Good luck.
