Red Slime- What causes it?
Ok,
First off...SORRY..I have been working my tail off since I got back from my little stint with the Military so I haven't been on line a lot lately (I know..Im a looser!).
Anyway, I bought a 6 stage water filtration unit back around x-mas and a 44 Gallon Little Brute G-bage can to store the water. I evaporate about 30 gallons a week and add to the tank about every other day. I had a really bad red-slime breakout way back when, but got some slime remover and its gone.
Anyway, it the last week or so..its back.
I setup a 55 for a neighbor (he's been stealing my H20) and now he has it too (btw..he can't borrow the water..I don't want it back (GRIN)).
So here is my question...what causes Red Slime? Is it phosphates? etc?
Let me know. I am going to pick up some remover and go through the process again, and my bud probably will too...but I want to know what the culprit is.
Let me know if you need more details!
THANKS!
Frank

Can be many things .To long the lights on,natural sun light, high nutrance. One thing is to do your checks of your water quailty and go from there.

I suspect the fresh water supply. My neighbor and I both are having blooms. The ONLY commonality is the Fresh water. I am reading through Tom's posts. Hopefully I can find the culprit!

Last time i had my bloom I replaced my lights and it went away.... I have had my current ones for six months and plan on replacing them next month... a few days after i replaced my bulbs last time it wiped out the cyano... my guess is as the bulbs age the spectrum wanders into one even more readily use my cyano.... it is basically uglying up the tank but the corals and fish and all are fine...

Holy cyano clownfishman! heh.
Phosphate is the limiting factor on cyano, mostly from detritus and food, may also be a faulty RO. It processes nitrate into N2 and O2, that's why there are little bubbles in it.

Well...a little bit of vacuming and its gone....I cleaned the "wholly horse hockey" out of my lil brute and changed the water in it as well.
I don't think lights are the factor on this one...since the 55 is brand new with brand new PC's in it. I REALLY suspect the Lil' brute or my RO/DI unit.
I'll continue to monitor it. Sorry about not posting pics...never had time .

Not yet..I need to get one of those meter thingy's....Man..I honestly haven't had time...
I bet it is really the DI part of the equation. I am thinking about disconnecting the final three stages and trying it from there. The DI part REALLY slows the flow of the filtration unit down, and I wonder if it got clogged the first couple of uses.
I leave again this weekend...no rest for the weary!

I know alotplay into red slime which I think is the worst of the algaes You can have , Just very ugly. I think Lights play into it very much, or the lack of it. I have in the past had poor lighting and started getting it and then upgraded and got rid of it. But I am sure also that the por water conditions can play a part.

I wonder if my bud (neighbor) with the 55 was running the lights for too short of a period??? Only thing I could think of on his.
I have 2 96W PowerQuads and a 400W MH. One of the 96's is 2 mos old, and the 400W is about 4 months old (I think)...the other 96 is at the 6mo mark.
So far, the water change and vacuum job seemed to have done the trick, but lights are always a good thing to keep fresh!
