Red Slime on Cheato

I picked up a good size piece of cheato today after work basically because I knew the source has a great abundance of pods.

However, when I put it in my fuge tonight I noticed what appears to be a small sliver of red slime on it. I immediately pulled the cheato after I noticed this.

Is there a way to remove the slime off the cheato without destroying it? I mainly got what I wanted from the chaeto which was all the pods since I just set up my 75g, but if I can continue to use this piece I will.

How can I remove the slime or do I just get some from a new source?

Also, in the case that a bit of the slime may have infected my system, how can I go about clearing it up... just want info beforehand if things do go wrong.

Thanks!

i wouldnt worry about your system being already infected...red slime is cyano bacteria...wich lives off of HIGH nutrients in the water..as a result ofover feeding/poor filteration etc.. just try & scrape it off, or wash it off..do you have a skimmer ?? any red slime already in your system ? usually well skimmed/filtrated systems wich aint fed alot will not contract cyano.

Aye, thanks for the info. It's a brand new system, i'm cycling atm and will continue to cycle for another week or two and I'm running a skimmer also....

so hopefully no problems....

I wouldn't worry too much about the red slime either. Just shake the ball of chaeto out to make sure there isn't a bunch of detritus stuck in there. You can also carefullly siphon out the red slime - probably the best and easiest thing to do.
