Are you using RO/DI water? Bulbs old? Low flow? Alk low? Phosphate?

Best time to siphon it off is at the end of your photoperiod when it's at its thickest. It will die back somewhat in the dark overnight, then re-grow again in the morning when the lights come back on... so removing as much as possible when it's at its thickest is the most efficient time to do it.

It's Cyanobacter - a bacterium vs. an algae as it is often called. It's a pretty ancient life form - pretty hard to kill off but it can be controlled.

ahh, the fun of cyano.

what Jenn said.

might want to ease up on the feedings. you want to keep the amount of nutrients going into the tank a bit lower.

OK thanks for the help I will try and pull as much as I can off During the night.

UI am not using RO water. I have good lighting and water conditions are nornal.

I am not using halides however.

I will do my best to scrape it off during the night.

Any prefered methods of physically removing it ?

Do a search for cyano - must be many posts.

Cyano feeds off of phosphates and taking measures to control phosphates will go along way to eliminating your problem. Std. measure to control phosphates are to minimize the import and maximize the export.

Std sources for phosphate are tap water & certain fish foods (flake food being high on the list). If your using tap water switch to RO - if your using flake food make sure it is phosphate free or switch to frozen or something that has less phophates. Std measure for export are water changes (with phosphate free water) and regular syphoning out the cyano which has acted like a phosphate sponge.

Cleaning your filters on a daily basis until this outbreak is over may also help. Setting up a refugium with macro algae will also help. Some people will use a phosphate sponge.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
