Does anyone have any experience with a red electric flame scallop?

Yes.. mine died after awhile. I don't think he was getting enough. From what I have read, these guys can be a little bit harder to keep then baby clams. They are beautiful specimens though. Are you thinking of getting one?

I've had one for 6+ months. I don't think I would ever buy one again though, mainly because I never see it. It seems to prefer dark/hidden areas of the tank.

generally very difficult to keep. they are filter feeders, some people have the correct sized plankton in their tanks, but most do not. they seem to do OK for about 3 months than they just show up dead.
even if you wanted to try one, i would not try one until the tank has been setup for more than a year.

mine moved to the back of the tank in a dark spot and died about 3 months later. They look real cool but I would never get another one.

I have been doing more reading, and found that during scientific studies these creatures accepted rotifers as food... rotifers are 5-10 microns, while most invertebrate food found on the market is 100-200 microns which they wouldn't accept.. I am going to try some rotifers out... if I can just find a site that has some..

Well i got him in and acclimated... believe it or not he wedged himself in a place he likes that is perfect viewing... wonder if these animals will take selcon as meals, since I am sure it maybe small enough... I got some frozen rotifers coming so I'm gonna try that as well..
Read that in the ocean they usually survive 3 to 4 years... i got another clownfish that I think is a female, I know they all start out as males, but this one although not big is lighter in color than others that look to be the same age... Got in me some bumble bee snails, nerite snails, margarita snails and some extra grumpy mini blue leg hermits..

Raising rotifers is a heck of a lot of trouble for a flame scallop.
You start a culture of Nannochloropsis first (similar stuff to DT), then you add the rotifers. Feed them too much, they reproduce like mad and crash the culture. Feed them too little and they starve. You cannot keep your Nannochloropsis culture in the same room as the rotifers, as the rotifers will inevitably find their way somehow into the Nanno culture and crash it.
I tried rotifers when I was trying to rear seahorses. Culture would grow at an alarming rate so I'd divide it... then suddenly it would crash. It's a real art and a lot of time and expense unless you're doing it to rear fish fry or something.

There is another big reasons flame scallops do not do well - they have a natural lifespan of about 2 years and by the time they are big enough to be harvested they are usually nearly that old . If you kept it for 6 months you probably had it until its natural death. If you need more info I can dig out a link to an excellent article on them....
