Rate this Skimmer - AquaC Remora Protein Skimmer With MaxiJet 1200 Pump
Looking for the BEST hang-on skimmer for the 12 gal nano. Just wondering if I found it. Please vote and let me know.
I'm a little hesitant about these 'hang-on' skimmers since I've owned one before and it was crapola!! I am not looking for a skimmer that requires tweaking here and there- I've owned one of those before!! I need the best hang on skimmer out there!

I had one for quite some time on my 46G, and it worked quite well. I recently switched to an in sump skimmer, largely because I added another 40 gallons between refuge and sump, and decided to go for sps.
For a nano, this is a great skimmer, and doesn't suffer from the overflow problems that the coralife seems to have.

Gwen, I've been running that same skimmer/pump on my 55 for several years and am very satisfied with it. The only adjustment you need to make is to raise/lower the height of the top of the skimmer to get the skimming power you want. It is so much easier to use and clean than the Bak-Pak on the 38.
Can't really go wrong with this hang-on.

I have the bigger one (Remora Aqua C Pro) and love it.5min to set up,it's thin so you can get your setup real close to the wall, quite and easy to clean!

I'm running it on my 75g tank, it was on my 30g and it does a GREAT job! But I think I will get a ASM G2 or a MR-1 in the near future because I don't know if 90g(total) of water is too much for this skimmer?
Gwen: this skimmer will leave your water sterile if you install it on a 12g tank!

I have the aqua C on a 20 L frag tank.
Does it work? Yes.
Is it loud? No
The only draw back I could see is, if you use the skimmers optional overflow box that skims the water surface and hides the powerhead. That the box is huge for small tanks. If you dont use one. I get a lot of bubbles back into the tank.
I think the nano cube has its own compartment in the back so you my be able to mod it so you dont need the skimmer box.

I agree the bubbles are the only drawback to this unit. I bought the extra part for the skimmer (the skim box that sits inside the tank and covers the powerhead) but this still didn't solve the problem with the bubbles.
It is definitely my favorite skimmer, though. I've been thinking about selling it, actually, but it's a good thing I held off. I bought a brand new wet/dry a few months ago and it has its own skimmer built in, but it's venturi and I think the Aqua C Remora was MUCH better. So I'm going to use the Aqua C in addition to the built in skimmer. I'm going to hang the Aqua C skimmer on the wall of the sump compartment of my wet/dry for increased skimming.
So, yeah, I'd give it a 10/10, even with the bubble problem. Maybe it's supposed to work that way for added aeration?

never had the remora, but did have an urchin w/ MJ1200 (same thing, just in sump). i rate it above the seaclone it replaced, but below the coralife and ER that i now own. it would probably do a great job on a tank that small. just my experience.
they have good resale value, i'll give them credit for that!
i have never had a nano, but for me the biggest factor for a skimmer on that size of tank would be how obtrusive it would be. like mentioned above, a prefilter box, bubble box or even the size of pump would be very important in the limited space. with the small amount of water you are dealing with, most skimmers will cycle the tank in no time and do a pretty decent job.

I have been cheating by using a different pump and it isn't working so well. I just don't have the cash for the Maxijet. I tweak with everything.

Ordered from Marine Depot:
AquaC Remora Hang-On Protein Skimmer w/ Drain Fitting + Maxi-Jet 1200 Pump
Price: $179.95
AquaC Remora Pre-skimmer For Maxi-Jet 1200
Price: $28.95
Order total: $221.84 ($13 for shipping)
My AquaC with the maxijet 1200 and overflow box works great on my 40L FOWLR. Easy to set up.
It has the optional drain which means I get very lax about cleaning it out. I attached a tube from the drain to a 1/2 gallon milk jug through a hole in the cap. I clean the whole thing out once a month or so with plenty of white vinegar.
Adjusted the skimmer about halfway - frankly I don't know enough to fine tune it, but it seems to work fine so why mess with it!
I managed to slightly crack the overflow box by overtightening the screws that hold it on the maxijet. The box is kinda big, but the overflow box in my 110 is big, too.
I noticed the noise when I first hooked it up, but either it got quieter or I got used to the sound.
No bubble problem at all.
I saved a few $$ by not buying the Remora Pro - it was the right choice for the 40L.
