I would say yes they are needed especially here in Florida water is bad and will cause algae blooms and not to mention what the live rocks would absorb from the water and slowly release later. If you can get one I would it sure will not hurt and your fish will love you for it. I use regular water to fill my fowler then after it cycled I drained it completly and filled with ro/di water I had been collecting in garbage cans for days.No algae problems at all tank is about 8 months old now. Also the filters make great ice tea

I'd say the main reason for using RO/DI water rather than tap water is because of the anti-corrosion chemicals that are used by many municipalities to protect their piping systems. Primary among these chemicals is a phosphate compound that also helps prevent calcium scaling in the pipes. While there are things you can do about the chlorine aded to water (time or Amquel, for two) there is nothing that can be done about the phosphate but to remove it. RO/DI is very good at doing this, and also gives you a baseline purity so you can prepare artificial sea water at the proper ionic balance using salt mixes.

It seems to have all the bells and whistles, names all the right names. I purchasd mine from Aqua Fx, one of our sponsors with a similar configuration, for considerably more money. Mine works fine, no complaints at all. "Caveat emptor"!

This is the one I bought from aqua-safe canada. I have only had it for a couple of weeks but I love it. I couldn't be happier and the drinking water is great too. I paid about $110 shipped. I have also heard pretty good things about Filterdirect and I like the refilable DI cartridge. The aqua-safe brought my TDS from ~130 out of the tap to 5 out of the RO to 0 out of the DI.
Either way I think they are both good systems. Good luck!

Clyde,
I am not familiar with that particular RO/DI, and it may be quite good, but I would prefer to buy a unit that others on the forum have used, as mentioned in this thread, and from a reliable dealer, such as one of our sponsors. "Service after the sale" is important, such as replacement parts. For example, mine came with a broken valve and a phone call to the dealer brought a replacement by next day air at no charge to me.
A couple of years ago, a manufacturer/dealer made a big 'splash' on the forums with his RO/DI units at great prices, but service was almost non-existent and there were many complaints. (No longer in business).
I'm always for saving money, but as Doug1 says' "It's cheaper to do it right the first time".
