Quick Question About A Tube Coral
I picked up a nice sized Tube Coral or as some call Sun Coral. I have this coral on the bottom of my tank. Do I have to put it under a shaded area or can it be near the bottom in the open. I have 260 Watts on a 72 Gallon?

Where you have it located is fine. I'm sure you already know, but this coral is nonphotosynthetic and thus must be fed on a regular basis.

It does not benefit from light so you can put it in the shade if you wish... but make sure it gets decent flow - they tend to open up more if they get good water movement. Also place it where you can target feed it easily. These are nighttime feeders and tend to stay closed during the day but they can be "trained" to open during the day if they are fed. When it opens at night, feed it. Move the feeding time earlier and earlier each time (not necessarily every day, but every other day or so) and as the feeding times get earlier, it will open earlier. I know folks whose Tubastrea sp. are open all day because they have been "trained" that way. Gorgeous corals - a bit of maintenance but sustainable if you are disciplined enough to keep it fed.
Yes -- pix please
I had a nice piccie of a couple of them... if I can find it I'll post it.

I know these need to be fed. I knew that before I bought them. I just didn't want them to hate being in the light. I will make sure they are in a good flow area. I have that Liquid Life Bio Plankton http://www.liquidlifeusa.com/Product...oPlankton.html stuff that I feed my feather star. Is that good to feed them or should I also feed some cyclopeeze.
JEFF, I went to Pethaven last wednesday and they had about 10 good sized ones. Ken is even starting to give me good deals now. I will get some pictures and put them up on here maybe tonight. Gotta go take a nap. Might have a long night of drinkin and partyin.

I feed mine live brine shrimp, mysis and cyclopeeze. I do use a feeder hat at night when the lights are on and squeeze cz on it during the day. It is a beautiful coral and so far I am doing good with it and haven't had the feeling it was a pain in the ....to take care of

what is a feeder hat? My first thought is some kinda of half bowl that you have a hole in the top to squeeze in food. That way the food stays around the tube coral?

You can make a 'feeder hat' out of the top of a soda bottle - cut off the "funnel" part of the top. You place the "hat" on top of the coral, and squirt food in the top. It keeps the food swirling around the coral until it's consumed. I don't use a 'hat' but many do. Of course my coral tanks are only 12" deep so it's easy to squirt them directly with a turkey baster. You can use a baster to squirt food into the hat.
We have had good success with Cyclop-eeze, as well as Kent Zooplex with Tubastrea. They will also eat enriched brine and other meaty foods.

Addendum... for those of us old enough to remember it, a 'feeder hat' resembles the "Cone of Silence" on the TV show, "Get Smart"!
