Quick Cooking LR Question
Ok, So Im in the process of cooking LR. I figure since I Cant have my new tank set up for 2-3 months, I might as well cook my LR. Well, I change the water about 10% a week. Would I be able to cook the LR with tap water and salt? Id be able to change the water more frequently, and in greater volumes if that'd work....

You should change 100% every week and using tapwater would really defeat the purpose

Figured it would defeat the purpose. No way will I change the water 100%. I dont really have the funds to spend on salt for 100% water changes, and more importantly the patients to make 3 trips to the water machine. I Guess when I start up the aquarium, it'll be partially cooked. At least it'll stay "live" til then.

I agree with Fly. Look at the directions for cooking rock in the BB fourm, it's a sticky written by SeanT.
To cook rock properly you need to change 100% of the water every week at least, plus you make up 10 extra G of SW every week to dunk and swish all the rocks through 2 or 3 containers to rid them of Detritus.

I think if you ran a skimmer on it and maybe even only did one 100% waterchange (Ro/Di of course) on it midway through along with keeping it in a circulated tub of waterwithout light you would still accomplish a whole lot of good for your rock. That would still cook it to soem extent. Usually a skimmer is kind of pointless as you change the water every week........
Just thought i would throw that out there : )

Hmm. I will be buying the skimmer for my 60g this week. The Coralife superskimmer rated up to 125g. So if I put a 125g skimmer, on what Id guess is a 30g tote, that should clean out tons of nutrients. I'll just keep doing what Im doing... The 10-20% changes weekly, start running the skimmer, and maybe a couple 100% changes. Probably a 100% change soon, then a couple weeks before I put em in my 60g tank.
I didnt know if there was a median, or if it was Uncooked or cooked. I didnt know there was a middle ground. So I'll just keep doin it, its not hurting any.
