quick clam advice needed!
hello,
I just got home from clinic and my roommate bought me a 2.5" crocea(sp) clam for my birthday! he's even learned how to acclimate things from these years of experience. My questions is: do I need to epoxy it somewhere? Will epoxying it hinder it's ability to open and close? I have a 250w MH 20K light about 14" from water surface in a 55G tank; should I go high or low?
Thanks for the quick replies, I'm sure I'll have some in a minute

dont epoxy, they have a "foot" that needs to be near a rock as it sits, it will eventually attach to the rock if it likes the place you put it, if it doesnt like it, it will use its foot to scootch around untill it either falls or finds a place it likes, so put it some place kinda secure.

yes its the same for all clams when they are small (under 3") they dont have big enough mantles to absorb enough light to make enough food to sustain them long term, so all the books recommend supplemental feedings of live phyto, if not they could slowly wither away on you,I maintain many clams doing this, all the way down to 1" ones.

xm should be fine, tho crocea is one of the more light loving clams so you can still go high. How about a pic? You definately want to place it in a secure spot, mine kept jumping. Whiskey recommended putting a rock in the sandbed, putting the clam on the rock then putting sand around the rock and clam so it would be stable until it attached. After two weeks I moved the clam and rock to where I wanted and it's been there since.

XM are fine, they actually have more PAR than most 10K's. that is fine bulb.
i have epoxied LR to the sides of my Squammies if they needed help staying put on my BB tank. with croceas/maximas this is usually not a problem. they will quickly put down strong bissel threads to anchor themselves to the LR.

Also, my clam would not attach to anything, I tried all tricks, so now it just sits on the sand bed, where it seems to be happy.
