questions about snails and stars in fuge
I have a new (1 month) refugium with 4 inch DSB, 24 hour lighting, its 29 gallons, anyway I put some grape calerpa (peltata) in there from some live rock from Fla. and it is growing about an inch a day. I want to put a couple of my big turbo snails in there as they are knocking over everything in the display tank !! I do not want them to eat the calerpa, does anyone know if they would ? also I have 3 green brittle stars and would like to put one in the fuge for some variety, would they be able to get enough to eat in the fuge ? I also wonder if I should be supplementing their feeding now because when I have my hand in the tank they try and wrap up my hand, seems they are hungry ! If I touch them they never try and run, they actually follow my hand. are they starving ?

GBS are always hungry. the hungrier they get the more likely they will go after your fish. most people have to supplement thier feeding in order to keep their smaller fish around. they will most likely starve in the fuge. they eat alot of food, and most fuges just get residual food.
the turbos should be fine, they will eat the algae off of the rocks and glass. they do not like to eat macroalgae.

thanks for the reply Geoff, I did feed my stars some tubifex worms last night and some shrimp pellets mainly to see if they would take them, they did eat them both and even fought over a pellet, I realize these may not be the best foods to add to a SW tank, and may not be nutritionally adequate. do you have any suggestions, and how often could or should I feed them, currently my parameters are great, I dont want to compromise this, nor do I want to starve them

they will literally eat just about anything. i would prolly feed them at the least once a week, better twice if there are things that you want to keep in with them. when i had one i used to feed it all kinds of raw seafood. shrimp, fish. whatever. it did not matter just drop it in, let it sink, those buggers will be running to it in no time. make sure each are fed. they will eat off an arm of a nearby GBS when food is involved.

OMG I didnt know that, its funny how the lfs and a few pages I visited never mentioned those characteristics, seemed like a scavenger only, I do have some frozen things I will incorporate, I am now considering giving one to a friend, maby 3 was too many, but I was trying to build a clean up crew, not a bunch of animals to have to feed alot. thanks again for the advice, and also I have not been able to get my camera driver to work, so I cant get any pics of the the skimmer I built from your specs uploaded, but It is working so well that I built one for my friends 300 gallon. thanks again for the DYI info on your page !!
