Question

Questions about a Mag 9.5

I am looking to purchase a Mag 9.5 pump. In all the images I have seen, the unit appears to lay on it's side with the out flow pointing sideways instead of up. Is this how the pump sits? or is that just the way it shows in the image?

You can have the outflow go up or sideways.

What do you want to run it for? I would strongly suggest an eheim 1262 if your looking internal or a velocity or panworld 50px-x for external

Hey Hop,
I was originally going to run 2 seperat mag5 pumps for my return (for redundancy) but am thinking of just running 1 mag9.5 instead. Do you not like the mag?

Nah, I'm not a fan of the mag pumps... Sorry. They run hot and have poor energy consumption, and not the most reliable. I have an eheim 1260 (I forget the old eheim numbers) that has been running non-stop for almost 11 years now and it still pulls about 40 watts of juice That equates to less heat, and better electrical costs. I liked that pump so much I now have a pro cannister on my FW planted tank, a 1260, 1262, 1248 and I'm saving for another 1262 for my skimmer feed

The oceanrunner pumps are a nice alternative if running them submerged. Quite a few of my buddies are running them and really like them FWIW.

I've got a mag 9.5 on my return and a eheim 1262 on my skimmer. While the eheim is awesome, I like the mag just as well. As Hoang mentions, you can shoot the output up as well.

In this picture you can see my Mag 9.5 return pump in the sump section.

I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever.

I have both Mags and eheim and I think that they are both great. Mag does run a bit warmer.
