Question about my return pump

Apperantly i need another overflow box beocuse my pump is pushing more water into the tank than the sump can pull in. overflows are about 50.00 which at the moment i cant do. the pump is pushing air when it is on. its not dry but it is pulling some air into the tank. my question is will there be a problem with the air in the tank until i install another overflow? will there be any damage to the pump? it is a 500 mag. theres not much in the tank. some LR and a few damsels. thanks

Need more info! How big is the over flow pipe? I take it this is a hang on over flow? How much water is above the pump (it may be sucking air if the water in the sump isnt deep enough) A picture of both would be a great help.

Could you put a ball valve inline with the pump and turn it down?

How is the pump set up? How deep is the water in the sump? What is it plumbed with on the return? It could be sucking air from the water not being deep enough or there is a leak in the return plumbing. How big (diameter) is the overflow plumbing? Unless the plumbing is real small it should be able to handle that pump almost wide open. A 1" pipe with handle around 400gph gravity fed. You have a 500gph pump? Aftyer head loss it should be only a little over the 400. How is the overflow set up?
