Question about a skimmer. (need all the help i can get)
hi all
Well i just wanted all of your help on whether this is a good skimmer to buy for a 120gallon reef tank
The skimmer that i was thinking about buying is
Aqua Medic Turboflotor 1000..i read its Suitable for aquariums from 120 up to 250 gallons in size.
Just wanted all of your opinons on whether it would do the job and if they are good or not. Any help would be great as i dont no much about skimmers.
cheers heaps for all your help and all of your time thanks

When I bought my First 180G reeftank it came with a Turbofloater 1000. I would say they are really only good up to about a 75 gallon tank. You could get by just fine with it on a 120G tank if you kept your bioload low (less than say 5 fish) and didn't overfeed. I would recommend buying the very best skimmer you can afford. I was told to do that, didn't listen, then ended up buying yet another later.
There are lots of options out there, Myreef, AquaC, Precision Marine Bullett skimmers, EuroReef, Deltec, Barr Aquatic, you name it.

What would you recomend, as a skimmer for a 120gallon?
Only because i will have to import one as they dont have any good skimmers here in australia. I was also looking at a
ASM-G3?? any good?
I only said the aqua medic one becuase i can get it fair cheap.
Also what do you think about a deltec MC600?
I still like the aquamedic tho...
but if what you say is true then i prob shouldn't get it..
cheers

That was my first skimmer on a 55. hated it. It was never consistant, overflowed regularly and didnt really pull much out of the water. I have heard of people who have them and love them though. I would suggest looking at Euroreef, ASM or MRC. I have a Euro and its a great skimmer, easy to run and works well. I also have an MRC MR-2 and i LOVE that skimmer! It is great. Very well made, upgradeable (wont have to buy another skimmer if you upgrade to a lrger tank or just want more umph) and MRC has outstanding customer service. Spend the money on a quality skimmer right off the bat, you wont regret it!

I had a turbofloater 1000 on my 50, worked ok with the oceanrunner pump, but I really wouldn't put it on anything more than a 50.
I too LOVE my MRC MR-2 on a PCX-55 pump and I can definitally say that bekett skimmers are the way for me, I can't beleave the performance of this thing. I plan to upgrade to a 120 soon and that is why I bought this sucker, and after using it I think it could handle a heavily loaded 200.
ASM G3 is also appropriate I think, and touted to be a good skimmer, but I have never used one. The G3 has the advantage that it is a little easer to use if you have no experiance with skimmers before. Just drop it in the sump and go.

I also have the PCX-55 on my MR-2. I just ordered a second injector and and a riser extension. It will br able to handle mucjh more now!
The beckett skimmers require a bit more tinkering but they will get the poo out of the water!!!
