Question about 10 gallon FOWLR....
Hello, I have a friend that wants to setup a 10 gallon FOWLR. He doesnt have much money to spend on stuff. He already has a 10 gallon tank, stand, lights, and a small HOB filter. He was looking at the LFS near me and saw this skimmer/HOB filter combo deal. Has anyone used this before or have any comments on this product.
Thanks,
Tim

i have no complaints
only thing is it is hard to set the flow on it its sensitive
for that skimer i have no clue but for the price i would give it a try

Thanks for your reply Disco_Jr. I was doing a search online and saw this ODYSSEAskimmer for about the same price and have to buy a PH to work with it like a maxijet 1200. This skimmer looks like the CPR BakPak.

Yeah the first skimmer in the first post is a skilter 250 rated to maintain a 55 gallon and will be used on a 10 gallon then later on maybe a 29 gallon. He doesnt want to get to big of a tank doesnt have much room for much bigger than a 29 gallon.

They do work but aren't great... I mean they are loud... but on a 10 I think it will do well
I have heard of some mods too that can help it out

Loud like how loud? I have a little giant pump on my 72 gallon thats loud. Is it that loud? I dont think he would want anything to loud being that it will be in his room. Also do you have a link to these mods or something i can see what they did so i could help him out with it.

I read most of the mods here... the other was told to me at a LFS... I can try a search for you and try to see if I can remember exactly the other mod. They weren't tricky as a I remember
Oh yeah and the loudness is when the venturi is open. You can close this whenever you are in the room and then it's actually silent
I think one of the mods eliminates the sound too
just so you have some idea what you are looking for one of the mods involves hooking up an airstone and another plugging up one of the holes in which water enters the skimmer tube. I think I heard of a third but it is escaping me... sorry
I'll do a few searches and see if I can track it down

IMO beyond loud! I used a skilter 400 on my first tank. 29 gal FOWLR. Bubbles fill the aquarium too. Anoying to clean and reasemble. I would suggest an Aquaclear HOB filter ( has better options for filter media) and a simple airdriven counter current skimmer instead. Lee's aquarium makes some that work OK. the small one is about 14 dollars.

in a 10g i would really only put one fish in it, if you have to. no fish and a cleaner shrimp would be bettter. there is not much filtration that can happen in a 10g.

Thanks for your reply Geoff. I was talking to him last night and i think i convinced him to go bigger. Like a 29 gallon tank. How many fish can be kept in a 29 gallon tank. I listed the fish that he would like to possibly have.
Long nose hawkfish,
Percula Clown(s),
Goby,(not sure what kind he would like)
I think that was it on his list of fish he would like. I will have to check with him later.
Thanks a lot,
Tim
