Question

Quarentine Inverts?

Does anyone quarentine inverts including corals? If you don't what do you do? A dip? I have heard about iodine dips and I think freshwater dips for certain corals. What do you think?

I have done fresh water dips on fish before with no bad results, although for a beginner it could stress out the fish more. In that case the benefits outweigh the good.

I have dipped my corals in iodine dip. So far they all seem to be doing great. To me the most important thing is to follow the directions to the "TEE" and dont use more. More is not good. Especially if you are using lugols iodine for the dip!

I personally have never quarantined corals or inverts but then again I dont go out buying ones that look sick or buy them from tanks that clearly may have bacterial infections or other problems. I imagine if you worry about it you should go ahead and QT but that takes extra systems. Personally I dont have that kind of room in my house. I acclimate my inverts (and corals) by using an IV drip and bubble wand for circulation (bubble wand on everything BUT the corals) over a period of about 35 minutes to a couple of hrs depending on the invert. Snails and starfish have about the longest acclimation in my home as far as the inverts go.
What works for me, however, may not work for you or anyone else. Thats the fun in this hobby...... the diversity.
Good Luck

I will do a 10-second FW dip (and vigorous shake) on any corals that are coming from a tank that has flatworms. Other than that, I don't bother.

(Excepting an elegance that we managed to keep for a year and a half. We did a rather elaborate malachite green dip on that one, as we'd heard that it helped in keeping the now-touchy species.)

I also don't bother to quarantine inverts - just a slow drip time. Corals get dripped for about 1 hour (depending on how much I have acclimating) and maybe 2 hours for snails. Starfish, esp Linkia sp. get up to 4 hours of drip time. (Mostly because I'm paranoid with that species.) So far, so good.

JMO,
Danielle

I quarantene corals sometimes. It depends on where I got the coral. If it came from a friends tank that I know then I usually go ahead and put it in the reef tank. If it came from a stranger or was newly aquired by the LFS then I put it in my frag tank for observation. I never dip unless the coral has a problem then I use Kent Tech D.

I never Q shrimp, snails, or starfish.
