It sounds like your pumps are bad.Is your tank grounded? If not your probly have stay voltage in the tank. You can measure it with a digital multimeter. One test lead to a ground and one in the water. If you do ,your electicfing you fish/reef tank .Then and you should anyway have a gronding rod(titanium) in the tank and all circuits go into a GFCI circuit. For your and your tank safty!

Have you cleaned your pumps ? Not doing so can lead to premature failure, but a current leak is dangerous, deal with it NOW

Is it possible this is just static? If so, there wouldn't be any measurable current attached, and voltage wouldn't be measureable after a discharge. Kinda like rubbing silk on a piece of amber, it sparks, then it's gone. Probably a good idea to ground the tank either way. Just some food for thought.

Talking

in my tank i think that it might just be the stay voltage deal so i ordered some ground probes online. I will also be hooking up a ground fault receptical to be really safe. I think the shock i was getting in my holding tank (water) was from a faulty pump, but i did talk to someone today that deals with electrical and has also had a saltwater setup in the past, and he told me that you can get salt build up in your sump area and that can cause current to run in the water, cause he said salt acts as a conductor. He said he had this happen himself in his tank and he wiped off all the salt depossits and also wiped down the power cords and that cured his problem. he also said the ground probes will help alot as well, but important to keep the salt depossits wipe off the sump or tank walls, he said all it takes is a thin layer of salt build up to conduct electric flow to the tank.

we will see if this all works,
thanks for all the help! glad i have somewhere to go for troubles
