Pump question,Submerge or not


I cant find it anywhere, Does a mag 5 pump have to be submerged or can I run it out of my sump

it can be either. i have used them as either.

It says on the box not recomended for external use with saltwater, You have done it though.

The problem I had was if the water siphon up from the refuge broke then it could not recover so I just keep it in the water no problems

here is a Mag 12 powering my CLS. it is clearly above the waterline. i also used a mag 5 and 7 for my skimmers. there is also a Mag 2.5 feeding my chiller. these are all external. i have only burned up one Mag. it was a Mag 9.5, i did not clean it for several months. it finally built up to much calcium carbonate in the impeller area and seized. this is a problem with any pump if not cleaned often. the warmer the pump the more you have to worry about calcium carbonate build up.

It will heat the water a tad if submerged, but not too bad!

You can say that about a 9, maybe even a 12, but the 24's even the 18's can raise the temp on 200-250 gallons (800 to 1000 liters) of water as much as 2 degrees F, especially if you have multiple applications in one water system...

I'm running all my mags external. Two 12s a 18 and a 36.

I have mine Mag 5 out of the water...I just have to hook up the 9 when I get the parts.
