Pump Decision Time

Here it goes,

MagDrive 1200gph Water Pump
115 Volt 60 Hz
110 Watts - 1.6 amps
1100gpd at 4 feet

MagDrive 1800gph Water Pump
115 Volt 60 Hz
145 Watts - 1.5 amps
1350gpd at 4 feet

M12 10gph per Watt @4ft
M18 9.3gph per Watt @4ft
as P.A. website states

now i maybe wrong but isnt it Amps*Volts=Watts?
M12 1.6A*115=184 Watts yielding ~6gph per watt
M18 1.5A*115=172 Watts yielding ~8gph per watt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Either way, my question is, "Would 2 Mag 12's for my 140 be ok?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Danner Mfg
Model 12
Mag-Drive 15.0'max 1175gph@1ft 110 Watts 1.5Amps

Model 18
Mag-Drive 20.0'max 1700gph@1ft 145 Watts 1.5Amps

so i dont know.. is the 12 a stronger pump seeing that they say it only loses 25gph@1' vs. 100gph@1' on the 18?

12 loses 3%@1'
18 loses 5.5%@1'

i may be thinking this too much so back to original reason for post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks

tony

Tony,

First, yea PIE....Power=I(current) * E(voltage)

As for your question about the pump, the answer is yes and no. I all depends on how you use it, how much flow you want, how much flow your overflow can handle, what you stick on the output of it, etc...

Be a bit more specific about it's use.

Tony, I would vote for the 2 MAG 12's for no more reason than redundancy. If one pump failed you would still have one working. The likelihood of both pumps failed simultaneously is remote. I have one pump on my 150 for each device...1 for each return, skimmer, chiller, UV, so on and so forth. If one ever died, it is no big deal (other than the money). I can buy a new one and still buy mail order because I am not in dire need to get everything back running. So in a long winded way...2 MAG 12's get my vote. HTH

thank you for the response.
as far as flow i was asking this question for that, to see if 2 12's would be sufficient flow for a 140. i guess i was pretty vague. sorry.
my overflow handling capability is undetermined to me at this time, i have 1and1/4" durso standpipes en each corner going into 1" pipes. they are separate and dont join together.

as far as what will be on the output i was just planning on 1" output coming out of overflow box into tank(1 on each side of tank)nothing more than a hole i guess. with sceen or netting or eggcrate cover.

skimmer will have own pump. refugium will have own pump. future possibility of CO2 will have own pump.

Thank you

tony

Myreef

Thank you
