Pulsating Xenia
I finally got a frag of this coral today. I've been wanting some since i first got my tank and the LFS never had any but today they fragged pieces of their HUGE colony in their main tank and had about 5 pieces of pulsating xenia still tied down to the rock for sale. I got a piece about 3 inches long with a nice growth of xenia on it. I tried putting it in a lower flow area so that it would pulse better and put it on the top of the tank so it has a nice amount of light. Anyone have any suggestions for placement or just suggestions on how to keep this coral alive and healthy?

I have mine near top of tank under T5's.
They seem to like the higher flow.

I know this has been said a million times, but.... IF the Xenia does well in your tank? You'll regret ever putting it in there. I fight a constant battle to keep it under control...

Xenia are cool, but they can take over a tank. I have some in a 10 gl tank w/ moderate light (36 w T5 - no reflector), low flow and no skimmer. They grow all over the tank, low, high - on the glass, on the other corals, everywhere. I need to cut them back every month. I think the key is high nutrients.

my LFS is pretty good about frag money haha. this will probably help me save up for a new tank then. so anyone know why they arent pulsing? is it because they are new in the tank? also they look pretty secured to the rock now should i take the rubber bands off?

they are pretty easy to take care of honestly. When I got some a couple weeks ago I got a rock with one small colony on it and two flat nubs of xenia. The main colony died off oddly enough but the two flat nubs have grown polyps and are now bigger than the one that I had. In fact a piece of the original big one I found re-attached itself to a shell in the back of the tank. I moved it higher up into more light and more flow and it has begun to grow like crazy. In two weeks it has gone from 1 polyp to 8. These grow like crazy if they like your tank. Just give them some time, good light, and some intermittent heavy flow. I have mine literally almost right in front of a powerhead thats on a wave system so is on for 20 seconds and off for 20 seconds. They LOVE this spot! :-)

sounds good! i heard they are very easy to maintain but ive also heard stories of them melting away very fast. just want to make sure they dont die after waiting 6 1/2 months for them haha. they are looking even better today and i think they might already be starting to grow more polyps. hopefully they start pulsing soon

Mmmm so jealous of you xenia keepers. Allthose prettylittle pusing pompo
s. Just call me Traci the xenia killer. First attempt was not bad. My beater took it out along wth every other coral in the tank. so now to the second- pulsed so prettily for little while and then boom! It curled up and started to disintegrate. Dnt u derstand it allmy other coral are happy, why do I have to be the xenia killer?
