Proud Father perhaps???

Hi folks,

After Drews posts, I have been paying more attention to the small stuff in my tank (more so than usual) and noticed something this morning that made me whoop with delight. I spotted 4 very tiny little tiger trochus snails A couple in my one overflow and 2 in my skimmer of all places. They are no bigger than specs, but are absolutely tiger trouchs with the marron striped shells Soo the question I have is this.. do tigers spawn successfully in tanks??? Should I start passing out cigars?

Great news Davej: We also have some small snails in both my wife's tank as well as mine. They don't seem to get very big and they are cream color with red stripes and they sure do multiply!! They come out mostly at night> Anyone dare to guess!! Johnny

Hi Steve,

That is good news.. even more good news is that I found several more in my tidepool sump. They are hard to spot in there.

Now the question is this. How do I promote their growth and health? I think I can count on the ones in the skimmer being pretty much stuck in there, until I drain it or something. Should I move the ones in the sump to my hang on CPR refuge?

Since these are algae eaters there should be plenty in there for them and no predetors, unless you could the bristleworms.

Well I dug in the tidepool and pulled out 14 of them )) They are now in my CPR refuge.

Hi Dave,

I believe your baby Trochus snails will do just great in the CPR. They'd also probably be just fine in your sump and would definitely do just fine in the main tank. Like you, I'm a little surprized that they're in your skimmer and can't really imagine them surviving too long in there, but hey, they've made it this far right? If you don't break it down and pull 'em out, you can let us know how long it is that they can actually handle that kinda treatment.

As far as what you could do to promote their well being, I'd say that (except for the ones in the skimmer) they'll do just fine on their own. According to Dr. Ron, a lot is still unknown in regards to their specific diet so *I* certainly couldn't tell you precisely what they eat. As I said, I think if they've made it this far, they're finding enough food and should do just fine. Here's an interesting link to an article from Dr. Ron over on AQFM: http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/a...wb/default.asp

Other than that, I'd say if you really want to track down more info on the "procedures" for captively breeding/raising these snails, you might want to send a nice inquiry to somebody who is doing just that, like IPSF. Maybe they could shed some more light on the situation, but I imagine they're doing just about what you are, simply on a larger scale.

Whenever you get ready to let go of some of your babies, I'm sure you won't have to look any farther than this board to find lot's of willing adoptive parents!

Regards,
Steve
