Protein Skimmer Problems ???

Hi, I have a 110 gallon tank and i just took my canister filters off and i am now using an overflow with a sump. I bought an Octopus NW-200 and i set it up yesterday. It is still not producing any skimmate at all. Is it not working properly or is this part of the break in period ? I have it in 8-9 inches of water. All it is doing is producing condensation in the cup. Please tell me what i should do. Thank You

I would wait a day or two longer.

Hi, Someone told me that this is normal and it could take anywhere from a few days to two weeks before it starts producing skimmate. I didn't clean the skimmer out before i used it. I meant to clean it and run it in the bath tub overnight with some vinegar but my local fish store came short notice and just set it up. Is this bad that i didn't clean it before i used it ? Thank You

there will be some residuals from the plastics that will slow down the break in a bit but no long term problems. Is it producing bubbles? as long as its producing bubbles I wouldn't worry if you went awhile b4 seeing skimmate

Hi, It is producing bubbles but for the size of the skimmer how is not producing any skimmate at all ? It has bubbles in the whole chamber except the botton inch other than that it is all filled up with bubbles. Thank You

The others nailed it on the head. After 2-3 days you should start seeing a little foam head which will gradually improve over the first few weeks or so. It is the oils and such from the manufacturing process that cause this. In addition the overflow and new sump probably had oils as well which will increase this time while they break down in the system. You will see that when you feed the tank and put your hands in the tank the same thing happens, although recovery is only about an hour or two for that.

So rest assured there is nothing wrong with your skimmer

Hi, Thank you for all of your help i didn't realize that the oils from the manufacturor would have an impact on the skimmer like this. I will wait a week and see what happens. Hopefully it will be starting to work by then. With this not producing any skimmate right now, this means all of that protein is just being recirculated right back into the tank ? Thank You

i dont like to add chemicals to any tank ,,but,,as a test you could add some "stress coat" to your water. if the skimmer foams like crazy then its adjusted fine. any conditioners that contain aloe will make a properly working skimmer foam like mad even if its not broken in. this would only be a good idea if you might nee to return the skimmer because its broken.

There's nothing wrong with it... it will take a few weeks for it to break in and the slime coat to form on the needles and volute of the pump
