Question

Proposed Sump config, advice needed

I found an Oceanic Model II sump on clearance at my LFS, and couldn't pass it up because my other LFS that orders custom sumps wanted 1.5 times what I paid for this one for just the sump, the Oceanic came with "extras" like drip box, plumbing kit, etc.

Hopefully I attached the img I created to help out...

The sump came with a glass "box" that the water will flow over then under thru a foam pad. The problem is that I was going to put MUD in the sump and there is no partition behind the drip box, so if I just dump in it, the mud would get under the drip box.

I was going to go to the local hardware store and order a piece of glass the same size as the current bulkhead in the sump, then silicone it into place behind the drip box to "hold the mud in".

Please look at my badly done paint drawing and make suggestions.

Thanks

Your partition idea will work well, rottielover, that is the way I had mine set up. Please note that I said "had" due to the fact that it has been removed. My sump/refugium/DSB deal turned into a stinking organic mess at about the 2.5 year mark. The problem with these IMO, is that a sump acts as a settling area for all organics and it quickly fills up with crap (turns into a typical area in nature that has low flow and high organics. You know that odor that you smell at low tide....

Steve,

May I ask how your tank is setup now? My LFS that is a Marine only store told me that this was THE way to setup the tank, and they showed me display tanks setup this way that have been running "for about 5 years" he said.

Is it perhapse possible to use a gravel siphon on the mud without sucking up the mud? I will have to go back there and ask them how they keep thier sumps up...
