prize blonde naso dead

everything was ok before i put my new 20 pound peice of marshall island rock in there.then the wife and kids came home from the 3 month summer vacation.mabe the fish didnt like the rearangement of his home and the peace and quiet of a empty house for all that time. the kids could even drive me nuts once in a while, especially after a move.he was hiding last nite and wouldnt eat his favorite meal.i thought he was just stressed from the family being there and mabe the new piece of boulder.now to get him out from under the rocks was another task. i had to move rocks ect. should i have just let him rot in there or did i do the right thing. now i have to aquascape the whole tank all over again. another giant 3 hour job. whats the lesson here guys? dont mess with the fish house or kick the family out of the house..lol...

Hey Nycreef,
Sorry about your Tang.
Stress factors are intangibles and it is hard to say if changing the aquascape or even the presence of additional people might have affected the fish. I doubt that these changes alone would have caused the death.
I do suspect that addtion of a 20 lb. rock might have affected the water quality or even caused an Ammonia spike. Did you "recure" the rock in a separate container before adding it to your tank?
Even "fully cured" rock can experience some die off due to shipping, transporting or the different water conditions in your tank.
Again, sorry about your loss.
Dick

nycreef-
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your naso. Did you let the rock sit overnight or for a few days in a bucket and check the water for ammonia. Never, ever add a piece of live rock to your tank when fully stocked, unless you know the piece if cured. Even if you buy "Cured" rock locally, put the rock in a 5g bucket overnight with a powerhead and test the water the next day. If ammonia is present, don't add the rock to your tank. Change a little bit of the water and repeat till there's no more ammonia, then add the rock to the tank.

HTH-

i didnt recure it because i knew that peice was in their store tank curing for over a month. i knew noone would buy that peice, it was too big for most tanks but it was beautiful.imnot sure it was the rock itself than the new placement of it .meaning the tang like the tank just the way it was .just like my wife and her furniture.and im sure the moving all the clothes and things back in to the house , people coming in and out all day must put him in strees shock.i really felt for him. next time, im going to cover the tank with a blanket on moving day, mabe that will help.
