Power filter and skimmer

In addition to a good skimmer,is it possible to add a power filter to a reef tank?Had a wet dry with bio balls and get constant nitrates.I've heard that activated carbon and skimming can do good.Let me know, Thanks. If so,what kind of power filter and what brand?

ya know, since you already have a tricle, why not gut it. that is what i did, take out the bio balls, add carbon and there ya go.

you can add a power filter to the side or back , but you will have to change out the filter cart. very , very often.. unless that too you run gutted to only add a very little flow to that area of the tank.

You can use it minus the standard filter media setup, add circulation and if needed you can add carbon bags or whatever to address specific issues.
Then again you could sue the trickle filter as well, remove the bioballs and run it as a sump, Personally I would recommend a decent skimmer, other than siphoning and doing water changes alot, a skimmer is prolly the easiest and most cost effective route to export excess nutrients

Power filter& skimmer

There really is'nt room in there for much being it's a Amiracle-sl15 hang on and besides,I bought a remora hang on to replace that awful skimmer that came with the filter.Have live rock already in the tank.Maybe I'll get some more.I was always in the habit of changing the media in pf's anyway.I'm trying to get optinum water quality.

I had a FLUVAL 404 canister filter as well on my 110 gallon for like a year and needless to say I no longer have it on. Only issue was the cleaning and maintenece of it.

I just use my wet/dry drip tray with a large whisper filter pak & carbon. I replace it every week or so.

Works good and tons easier than the canister.
