Possible Aiptasia

Hi

I am considering buying an already established marine tank as my first marine tank. I have been sent pics, one of which (aiptasia1.jpg) seems to show some aiptasia - can anyone confirm this?

If it is indeed aiptasia, does this mean that the tank is not worthwhile purchasing?

I have also included a second pic (tank.jpg) in case anyone has any other comments/queries/advice.

Thx

Gouri

Aiptasia is what that is, But how many are in the tank and no that tank is still worth while to have. You can go out and buy and set up a new tank and get them , don't let that stop you from buying. You can get rid of them.

The rock also looks to have red slgae growing on it . hard to see

Aptasia is a fact of tank life I think. I scrape them off and put in some baby peppermints that might eat them someday. The rest of the tank is pretty.

Red algae is due to bad water or cooties in the sandbed...I am guilty of both in my horrid past.

Thanks VWD and Phishnoob...............maybe the attached photo is a little clearer?

Is red algae a major problem or just a question of bettering the quality of water?

Thx

Peppermint shrimp are taking care of my Aiptasia problem.
I had alot in my tank. They are slowly dissapearing at a rate of a few a night.
It did take my Peppermints some time before they started eating them. I expected to see results immediately after introducing them. It took about a month before I started to see Aiptasia going away.
Another solution is Joe's Juice. That works well also.

Tell us a little more about the tank. What size is it?

Take care of the water quality and maybe upgrade the lights when You buy it and over time that will go away , Remember to use RO/DI water only.

Welcome to TRT it's ok to buy that setup. sometimes you get those on frags you buy and the red algea can go away with good water changes! If the price is good buy it.

I agree that the brownish coating (red slime) on the rocks can be removed with good husbandry. The aiptasia, as stated by others, can be taken care of with peppermint shrimp or by hunting them down with joe's juice. When/if you move the tank, you will have easier access to the rocks to kill the aiptasias.

It looks like a tank that can be made very beautiful with some TLC, and possibly a few upgrades. hth

Thanks for the welcomes! So nice! Even though I don't actually own a marine tank - yet?!!

The tank is 48"x26"x24" so quite large and hopefully easier to handle for a beginner!

I was worried about the colours within the tank in that the rocks seem to be different shades of brown and nothing much else. Perhaps this is just down to the lighting - although the tank does come with 2x150W Halides (probably 10,000K)....

But I would love to own it! The only thing holding me back is the reaction of my mother!!!

Only time will tell..........................
