poly-filter changeouts...

hey folks...
to combat a phosphate problem i've been having (apparently the cause is NOT overfeeding), i added four 4"x8" poly filter pads to my sump. that was about a week ago. assuming a moderate amount of phosphates in my 100 gallon tank, does anyone know approximately how long i should wait before replacing the poly-filters? also, how effective is good quality activated carbon at removing phosphates from water?

The manufacturer recommends changing the media when it turns brown (after turning black). Cut a piece in half. If it is brown all of the way through, its time to replace it. How quickly this happens all depends on the nutrient levels in the tank. Their web site is pretty informative:

Polyfilter has worked well on my tank. It doesn't seem like there are any down sides to its use.

Good luck!

I have used it on a few occasions and change it after about 4 days, with daily rinses. Best to figure out the source of phosphates. polypad gets spendy after a while

well, my biggest problem is that i can't seem to locate the source of the phosphate! i've cut way, WAY back on feeding (not as if i was overfeeding to begin with). i really don't know where it's coming from...it's not my RO water because i've tested it. i'm starting to wonder if it's because i put live sand on top of crushed coral and any debris in the CC is just decomposing, resulting in phosphates. i've been banging my head against the wall on this one for a while!
