Question

Plumbing from display tank

Hi everyone,

Just getting started plumbing the 90, that accident put me behind. Anyway, I installed the bulkheads and was planning on using a durso standpipe in the overflow, but it seems complicated. AGA sells some kits, but I heard they were expensive, especially for a reefer on a budget. What other options are there for this area? Does anybody just leave the bulkheads and let water flow right to them? Or is that too loud with all the water falling? Thanks in advance.

I also installed the Durso standpipe in my 180 reef. No, the Durso standpipe is not complicated. In fact, it is amazingly simple.

Hmmm.. whats a durso?? I have been having gurgling in one of my overflows. The kit that came with my tank had a two pipes, one for each side. At the top was a slightly larger section with an insert for a plastic piece that looks like a strawberry basket, lattice and with holes for the water. I inserted some black foam to reduce the flow and back the water so I wouldn't get the gurgle but it ended up creating a vaccum that sucked the foam down into the pipe. Luckily the bulkhead stopped it before it sucked into the tubing. I have been considering a ball valve to reduce the flow but haven't decided on the best alternative yet. Any ideas would be welcomed.

Dave,

Go to this site http://www.rl180reef.com/frames.htm and then click on "Durso Standpipe", its to the lower left of the clownfish picture. He's got different types of standpipes for different applications. And while your at it, check out the rest of his site, it's one of my favorites! HTH.

There was a thread on rc about silencing an overflow by putting a piece of airline hose in the outlet. Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but it does sound easier and less expensive. Here is the link.

That durso thing is ****ed easy.. and quite a little stroke of genius. He mentions threading in the bulkhead, mine don't have threads and is 1 in. He does make note that if they are not threaded to just put the coupling in so you can attach the larger piece. Looks like its back to the hardware store Thanks for the help guys.. the gurggle can be a pain in the butt when you are trying to sleep. Doesn't bother the cat much, but it does me.
