Is it the Berlin Red Sea Skimmer, or one of the skimmers with the needle wheel intake? This will make a difference, and both would be a bit easier to plumb if the overflows were to empty into a sump first, then return to the tank with a separate return pump.

I don't believe that is going to work. You need a recirculating skimmer or an airstone type skimmer. There may be other designs that work, but my head is not working right now
Once you have a recirculating type skimmer it’s just a matter of installing the proper plumbing ahead of the feed.

its a berlin red sea skimmer. i want it to go to the skimmer before the sump to get as much possible water through it.

The best bet with that skimmer is just to ensure that the tank drains into the same section of the sump that the skimmer's pump feeds from. I don't see a way to feed it directly from the overflow... Sorry.

As mentioned, if you want to do this, the easiest way is to pick up a recirc NW skimmer. If you decide to do this down the road, let me know and I'll find an old diagram on how to plumb it to avoide any surges from the drain and keep the waterlevel constant inside the skimmer body.
