Please help with feather duster

Hello
I have a 1 year old purple feather duster. It is secreting a purple slime that is covering its entire tube, as well as surrounding sand. He still looks healthy and shows his crown. Is he on his way out? Will this slime harm my tank? Any help or info. would be appreciated......Anthony

I had two feather dusters do the same thing. One of them lost it's crown. I pulled the tube out and threw it away. I noticed that the worm was still in the live rock. Then the other one lost it's crown. I left that tube alone. About 2 weeks later, the worm that I took the tube from made a new one. It slowly moved out toward the light. They both made new crowns and are doing fine. That was probably six months ago.

Don't throw them away.

It is common for a feather duster to "pop their head". I have several and one seems to do it every few months. Each time growing larger and larger. It is cool to see it grow back over the course of a few weeks.

Dont toss out the tube

In my VERY LIMITED experience, I have found that 1 of my 2 feather dusters behaves similar to yours...he has wilted....and emerged with AWESOME color...he has thrown his crown...and emerged with AWESOME color...and his tube has turned purple opaqish (sp?) and he still have more vibrant color that the other one that just sits there....

ONLY differnce between to the two is how I have them stuck in some live rock..I actually started to throw him away and hesitated to give him a chance the first time he threw his crown...and he came back looking better than ever...give him a little more time and see what he does would by my rookie advice.

Mine lost its crown a week ago and was also producing some slime, although it looked more like a spiderweb to me. It only did that the first day so I guess its ok, nothing strange ever happened. Im crossing my fingers in hope that it grows its crown again since I've heard that they usually lose their crown becuase of starvation. I think mine lost its crown becuase my new clown fish thought it was an anemone and liked to play alot with it. It looked cool though.
