play sand to fill out volume
Can I throw in a few pounds of play sand to augment the volume of the Caribe Aragonite stuff??

Yep i think so, but if other people say no you can just get 5 pounds of sand for 3 bucks at most pet stores.

I think some people use it in their tanks to save money, im guessing you should rinse it off good first though.

I would't. Play sand is silica based, not argonite based like the rest of the sand that you are supposed to do. If you use a silica based sand, you are just asking for trouble. You will have never ending diatoms and other algaes. You can get 20# of dry argonite sand for less than $10 at Pet Smart so that is the route that you should go.

I doubt you'd have a problem. Silica sand is not dissolved silicates, if that was the case, glass tanks would dissolve too.

Many people use silica based sand with no issues. I've used it several times for tanks and a few for fuges and everything has been ok.

it's an 80 gallon tank....I was thinking about 2/3 Caribe aragonite and maybe 1/3 play sand....
interesting debate....

Personally just because of color, I would use the caribsea sand. The playsand has a yellow color quite often.
