Play sand?

What is the truth about using a silicate play sand? I've heard its horrible and I've also heard its no big deal? Does anyone have any real life experience or research?

from the research I've done, survey says get aquarium grade sand. I tried going the walmart or home depot route, but I didn't get a good response and ended up buying a 20lb bag of pink somoa sand at my lfs for $20. It was well worth it for the peace of mind, not to mention how gorgeous that pink and white sand is compared to the brown stuff!

I used 250lbs of playsand from homedepot (cost me about $15) in my stingray tank and it worked great. The sand is a bit dark in color for a while but lightens up.

I listened to the talking reef show which is what started me thnking. But the sand he used was old castle and I was under the impression that was aragonite not siilca based. Around here all I can find is quickcrete play sand. Anyone with any experiance using this stuff?

Pak Mix sand at HD is safe (fizzed with vinegar and nothing has died after a year). I never tried the Quickcrete, as a letter to their customer service confirmed it is silica based.
