Maybe one of these types of green, brown, or red algae.

Sounds a lot like sargassum to me. Often new LR grows it for a while...it seems to be a "phase"...however one tank I maintain is starting to re-grow it after almost a year. It's had some amazing plant stuffs grow on it from Caulerpa racemosa to some other caulerpa (sawtooth?) and sargassum. Unfortunately it's growing Valonia too....and lots of it!

Sargassum is harmless, many larval (and not so larval) fish live in it. You will see it washed up on beached quite often.
