Pistol Shrimp Question
Just wondering as they make a loud snapping noise, are pistol shrimps dangerous for glass tanks, should I be worried about the one I have in my 125 breaking the glass or something?

i gotta agree with everyone else, no trouble with glass, especially not a 125, thats pretty thick glass!! they dont strike things like a mantis shrimp does, they snap their claw and shoot out a little jet of water that stuns their prey, i doubt it could do any damage to your hand (unless you have a huge one) and it surely couldnt pop glass, maybe really really really thin glass, but not a 125, but i could be wrong.
any way, i have a shrimp goby pair in a 120, never had any problem.

Now make sure you have a pistol shrimp or snapping shrimp first, the pistol will have one claw bigger then the other. the snapping you hear is the claw it self. usally people have them in a tank with a gobie. most if not all variations of the pistol shrimp are blind. will they eat your fish , no you can feed them flake food or any other type of meaty food.
if the claws on the his guy are not big/small to each other then you may have one of two types of Mantis in there.just use common sense when gettign close to it.
you can try looking at night time for him and see if he comes out.

A Pistol shrimp will not damage a tank! They can hurt you though. My wife was getting some corals out of a bucket after we moved our 120G tank into the house and she didn't know the pistol shrimp was in that bucket. It snapped her finger. When I came back into the room she was in tears. It hurt for a while and then was over. No skin broken, No blood. Just a lot of pain she said.

I am sure he is a pistol shrimp as I purchased him, he hides most of the time under a rock in the sand, just wanted to make sure he could not start a flood. Thanks for the replies
