Question

Picotope question

Hey well ive been lookin around for a nice tank to sit on my desk. And i was thinkin bout purchisin a 3 gallon picotope tank..

My question is what could be kept under the lights?
Livestock wise; could i put a fish?
and; is it possible to keep like a Monti Cap under the pico light if i put it uptop.
Also; what is general upkeep for a pico tank like?

Thanks for all the help, having a tank this small would be a big step cuz i right know have an 8 gallon and am upgrading to a 55..THANKS!

What is the light? I have kept monti caps in pretty low light situations. For a pico, waterchanges are your main maintenence. Make sure you top it off every day. Genereally you want to stick with pretty hearty stuff.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

9 Watts? Eek. That's hard to tell. I guess the tank would be pretty shallow so corals could at least get maximum benefit but I'd try for a more powerful light.

Nevermind. The JBJ picotopes look pretty nice. I wouldnt reccomend SPS in a picotope tank even if you did get strong enough lighting, they will probably die from fast swinging parameters. Id get the JBJ with the 9w lamp and just keep zoas and soft corals.

Make a ricordea tank. Easy to take care of and they dont mind swings. AND that 9 watt light would do fine with rics. ive grown them in my 2.5 gallon with just about the same amount of light. Just realize you will have to extend photo period.

yep, probably a good idea just sticking with softies. Man, you could make a freakin AWESOME zoa tank with a picotope I'm sure. Good size too for a nice compact desktop aquarium. Heck, perhaps I'll pick one up to play with. I saw a pic somewhere of a guy with a clamp on MH fixture on a picotope. I'm not sure how that would possibly work out for him. Seems like the temperature swings would be INSANE when the light turned on or off. You could try out something like this:

http://www.marinedepot.com/Current_U...FIT5T5-vi.html

It would give you 36 watts of T5HO lighting. Would hang over the sides about 3 inches but thats not bad and at that water depth, you could keep just about anything you wanted under this amount of lighting. Just a thought.
