picking LR on vacation??
Hi! My folks are going to Bequia for a week or so, and I thought I might ask them to bring back some LR and LS on the plane. Can you do this or will customs go nuts??
I'm pretty sure there would be no contaminants, cuz there's not much on Bequia at all, and practically no industry. The only thing I can figure they make there is hot sauce (which is awesome BTW).
Would this be a horrible "un-environmental" thing to do?
I figured they could bring it back in a cooler, wrapped in wet newspaper or something... It would only be one or two days out of the ocean...
What do y'all think??

I'm really not sure about legal issues on all this. But I'd say there is a good chance you can't do this. But I could be wrong.
Others probably know rules for sure or where you can find out
but maybe just stick with the hot sauce

I'd check very closely with customs or someone, because while there are some places in the Caribbean where liverock is still harvested (Haiti comes to mind), importing it and just bringing it back on the plane may be two different things.
On the other hand, I brought back rocks, sand and coral skeletons picked up on the beach and customs said nothing about that.

People Do still collect live rock , But they are companies that have permits and pay fees , I would want to check with custom where needed to make sure that You parent don't get in trouble and that any rock they get won't be taken away . Vince

If I were going on vacation, and through customs, multiple airports, the last thing I would want to do is carry a box full of wet, heavy rock, that may or may not got me thrown in jail, especially for someone else's hobby, but if they agree, go for it, it won't do any more harm to the environment than someone else collecting it and selling it to you.

Yeah, I figured they could check it. I can't really see my mom lugging a cooler full of rock in the airport.
You live in Asheville? i went to college at UNCA, grad.2002. Neat place, but I couldn't live there any more. Too many hippies for me, and I was one!! They smell funny and when Natural Mystic got that scabies infection, that was it for me... But I love to visit...
I've never been to another college town with such a fun bar-scene night life. I loved to bar hop between the beer garden, hannah flanagans and barleys. Also spent many a night at the Brew & View. Still haven't made it to see a show at the Orange Peel, but I hear that place is incredible. I always went to Stella Blue. Are they still around?

stella blue is still around. The orange peel is great, excellent sound, big names in a small venue, but they @#$% you on the beer, if you like micro brew is 3-4 bucks and they give you a tiny 10 ounce plastic cup. PBR is like 2.50 for the same 10 ounces. There are a lot smelly hippies here, and a few that don't stink. I'll be at the Orange peel on Sunday for Hank Williams III.
