Picked up a nice Porite frag, and care suggestions?

I put on hold, and finally broke down and bought a nice yellow porite the size of a baseball. Has a perfect branching structure, and no bad spots. I have read to place them in a high current area with high lighting and calcium levels. Any hands on with this coral, and suggestions for helping them thrive.

Thanks in advance,

Dustin

I love Porites, these are cool corals and I want to get a few different colors of them. You pretty much hit the nail on the head, good lighting and current, good chemistry. My Porites is one of the corals that will let me know when something is up. To state the obvious, if it is not extending at least at night, something is probably wrong.

I knw it's been a few days for this thread, but when keeping Porites, don't get worried if it closes for a few days. Mine just went through this phase and scared the crap outta me. It seems every now and then Porites will close up for a few days, then towards the end of this "phase" will secrete a layer of mucus containing wastes. Just a little FYI.

Thanks for the tip. Mine has been opening, but not very full yet? I assume the polyps can get damaged and have to repair themselves before eating. It still appears to be acclimating itself, recovering from shipment.

Yes, it took mine a few days/weeks before it would open fully. And even then it wouldn't open much during the day. Now it's open and beautiful all day and all night Good luck with yours!
