Photo Period

I seem to be getting some mixed information on length of the photo period. I run 4 110watt VHO's with an icecap 660 ballest. It's a 55 gal. It comes on at 2:00 pm and off at 3:00am. It does get a small bit of non-direct sun light before 2:00pm. The lps, sps, and softies are growing at a fairly steady rate. I do however get a thin coating of green algae on the glass, that requires scrubbing about once a week. Some have said at 8 watts per gallon vho intensity I should run the lights 9 to 10 hours a day instead of 13. Would cutting down the photo period be benificial to the tank? Would this cause stress to the corals and fish, who are very used to a 13 hour day? The algae is not bad or anything, but if I'm giving these guy's to much light and it would actually be better for the reef to cut it down, I will. Anyone's take on vho photo period would be great to hear. The more experience we can build off the better decisions we can make. Thank you all!

FWIW the photperiod in the tropics where most corals originate is approx 12-13 hrs a day. If you have to scrape a mild film of green algae off the glass weekly, thats fairly typical. If you were having to clean the glass daily I would be concerned but it sounds fairly typical IME

Hi Nick.

If your tank is doing well then I would not change anything. Your fish and corals will tell you if they are unhappy. Since they are growing well and you haven't noticed any problems, I wouldn't worry about making any changes.

Andrew
