have you thought of doing an FSB? have you looked at Matt_b's tank? both are very good ways of getting around the whole BB look problem.

What is FSB? Fake sand bed? False Sand Bed?

As far as sand goes ... am I really commiting a horrible sin in having a shallow sand bed?

FSB-false sand bed. read through my build thread in my sig.

i used a mixture of two part epoxy and Southdown sand to create my FSB.

So what are you doing with a FSB ... gluing sand to the bottom of the tank?

I run a Kent phosphate reactor ($32 bucks online) with Power Phos in it and it helps a lot. I feed phyto plankton but sometimes over feed, so it helps keep the phosphate levels under control.

Thanks for the input HHC. I guess for now I will continue with my water changes. I brought my calclium reactor online last night and am slowly getting it tuned in ... hopefully this will help with the calclium and alk part of the water quality equation. I'll keep my eye on the pH to make sure it stays where it should. Other than baking soda, are there any good buffers out there for addition in case the reactor makes the water to acidic?
