Thats easy to do(add to much food) I have 3 big tangs and they go crazy when I don't feed them daily!!!!!!!

What are you feeding the skimmer with now?

It is supplied by a MaxJet 1200. I thought about direct feeding the skimmer from one of my overflows and regulating it via a ball or gate valve, but I was having trouble getting the plumbing to fit in the stand the way I wanted to plumb it. So I decided to feed it with a pump that would supply close to 2 times my tank volume each hour, and then use the gate valve mod to slow the flow out of the skimmer to allow maximal contact time for maximal extraction.

Let's not start the BB wars over here too.

I agree that you need to give your tank some time to settle out, keep skimming wet, get on a water change scedule (like weekly/biweekly) and let the tank do it's thing.

It went though quite a time there, lots of stuff you could see died, but much more you can't also did, its going to take a bit to come back up to speed but it will.

Don't try and force it, that's were the problems start,... trust me.

Not trying to start any wars here, just not ready to remove my sand bed just yet. More out of laziness than anything else. It seems that the growth rate of algae on my glass as slowed down since my last water change ... maybe I am finally catching up with getting the water quality back on track.

For now, patience is key ... I agree. The majority of the tank improvemnt over the past few weeks I think has more to due with the tank itself rather tahn anything I did other than water changes.

Not to weigh in with the BB wars, since I have so little experience to start with....

But there is a fantastic website that someone posted in one of the other threads recently: http://www.oregonreef.com/. This amazing reef is mostly BB - but the visible areas have thin dusting of sand where there is no rockwork for aesthetics. I like that approach a lot and I think my next tank will have something similar.

That's basically what I have then. I don't have a 4-6 inch traditional deep sand bed, mine is probably 2 inches at most in the deep places and 1/2" in the shallow areas.

That is exactly what I have. Now my tank is no where the quality of that tank though!

I have my rock on PVC, no sand under the rock....a spray bar to push detritus out under the rock and a very shallow SB for aesthetics only where the bottom is visible!

Like this...not that you really can see the BB under the rock...as it is planned that way...but when I do rock blasting it sure gets whatever nasties get trapped anywhere out ...plus I can divert 100% flow out of the spray bar to stir POOO Up

best test kit you have is your eyes ! you see algae you have phosphates !
whisk , i don't think that the glass cleaning thing is any indicator of any phosphates , too many other varibles to use that as a gauge !
for you's that don't like b.b. !
